If anyone ever asks why they should hire a lighting designer – a project like this is a good example. The Brown Institute at Columbia University is an amazing example of what happens when you pair great products with extraordinary imagination. Lighting Designer Buro Happold developed this amazing concept using Feelux STIX HDV Series.

The design suggests the concept of a ordered chaos that is the modern newsroom. Functional, versatile and endlessly interesting, the lighting is anything but generic in the multi-purpose space.
In order to accomplish this combination of form and function the team of Gabe Guilliams and Pei-Chun Yang at Buro Happold worked with Feelux to integrate the STX HDV into the interwoven pipes creating a direct and indirect lighting system.

We worked closely with the architects on the initial design in the ceiling. The idea started with a networking grid of light at the ceiling. We wanted to provide both direct and ambient lighting so the room would not feel flat with just the effect of indirect light.
Here’s how the remarkable system worked.
The other aspect of the lighting design were the carefully designed perimeter panels used to provide illumination when media is being presented or during special events. The panels are also backlit the FLX Stix system.
Projects like this are a terrific example of what happens with a manufacturer and lighting designer collaborate to create something entirely unique that doesn’t necessarily mean crushing the project’s budget.
